Eberron Repeating Crossbow
The Repeating Crossbow is an experimental magic weapon created by House Cannith shortly before the end of the Last War.
The Repeating Crossbow looks like a crossbow, but the entire bow mechanism is completely encased in a lacquered wooden overlay. It additionally has a small switch on the side with three settings: single shot, burst, and full auto. A character using the Repeating Crossbow may fire in any of the three modes by changing the switch to the appropriate setting. Like most bows in Eberron, it has an embedded Eberron Dragonshard Crystal, powering the cocking mechanism and magically creating ammunition. Although powered by magic, a Repeating Crossbow is not counted as a magic weapon for the purposes of overcoming damage resistances or reductions.
The Repeating Crossbow comes in Light, Hand, and Heavy varieties, and its single-shot mode has the same damage and range as each variety. Each firing mode enables the user to sacrifice effective range for additional damage.
Single Shot Mode
Firing in single-shot mode operates exactly as a non-repeating crossbow of the same variety, with the same damage and range.
Firing in burst mode causes the repeating crossbow to fire several bolts in rapid succession at a single target. The range of the crossbow is reduced to half its range in single shot mode, but the base damage dice for the attack are doubled.
Full Auto Mode
Firing in full auto mode causes the repeating crossbow to fire more than a dozen bolts in rapid succession, damaging all creatures (including allies) within a specific area of effect. The range of the crossbow is reduced to 1/3 its range in single shot mode.
The attacker makes a ranged attack roll, which sets the DC for a Dexterity based saving throw for all creatures in the attack area. Damage is rolled depending on the choice of attack and applied to all creatures in the area that suffered from the attack.
When attacking in Full Auto Mode, the attacker can choose to sweep the area, or concentrate their fire.
When sweeping the area, the area of effect is a cone starting from the attacker out to the modified long range of the crossbow. All creatures in the cone but within the normal range of the crossbow suffer full damage if they fail their saving throw, or suffer half damage if they succeed in their saving throw. All creatures in the cone but between the normal range and the long range of the crossbow suffer half damage if they fail the saving throw, or no damage if they succeed. The damage for sweeping the area is the normal damage for the crossbow variety.
When concentrating their fire, the area of effect is a line starting from the attacker out to the modified long range of the crossbow. All creatures in the area suffer full damage if they fail their saving throw, or no damage if they succeed. The base damage dice for concentrated fire is doubled.
The following tables lists mode, range, and damage for each variety of repeating crossbow. Note that two ranges are given. The first range is normal range; attacks at that range are normal attacks. The second range is long range. Attacks beyond normal range up to long range are done at disadvantage. Targets cannot be hit beyond long range.
